Pilots claim world's scientists can be wrong

17 June 2007

Responding to claims from the British Airline Pilots' Association that aviation is being made a scapegoat for climate change, Darren Johnson, Green Party London Assembly Member, has criticised industry lobby groups for putting profit before the climate.

"The fact is that aviation is a significant contributor to climate change and the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions. In London, 34% of emissions are already from aviation, and the Government has admitted that its prediction of a two- to three-fold increase in air travel by 2050 could result in aviation accounting for around a quarter of the UK's total contribution to global warming by 2030.

"This is not the first time that an industry has distorted the science of climate change in order to protect its profits. It would be wholly wrong to take the word of interested parties over the considered and overwhelming international scientific opinion."
